About Dan

Photography has been a part of Dan’s life ever since receiving his first camera and developing his own images at the age of seven.  From the black and white darkroom of the past to the digital “lightroom” of the present, Dan is mainly self-taught through the process of trial-and-error and reading books by some of the greats, including Ansel Adams, Peter Gowland, John Hedgecoe, and Alfred Blaker (just those few covers a lot of ground!).  While pursuing an undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Pennsylvania, Dan took his first formal course in photography from Becky Young (early in her career – Becky went on to become Professor Emeritus at Penn).  After graduating, Dan started his own photographic business, Studio c, until an injury to his right eye made it impossible to focus a camera – this was before the age of auto-focusing cameras.

Dan’s career returned to science, but photography was never far from his life – especially once auto-focusing cameras became available.  Embracing the digital age of photography, Dan continues to develop (pun intended) his skills the “old-fashioned” way, but has also attended workshops and courses led by Moose Peterson, Joe McNally, Laurie Excel, Ben Willmore, and Adobe Photoshop Certified Instructor Dave Cross.  Many of Dan’s photographs (including all on the home page) have won awards, including several best-of-show recognitions.  Dan’s photography and photographic services are available through Studio c.
